A Brief Introduction of Media Monitor for Women
Established in 1996, largely inspired by the Beijing Women's Conference
the previous year, the Network draws together media professionals
and others interested in how women are portrayed in the mass media,
including the advertising industry.Set up columns and special pages
("Look at media through women's eyes", "Media Watch")
in CHINA WOMEN'S NEWS, publish articles by the members and the public
Meets regularly to compare notes on representation of women in the
media, and sends letters of complaint regarding particularly damaging
items. Conducts surveys, such as how the established newspapers,
radio and TV programs, portrait men and women, what role the female
and male journalists have play. Conducts trainings to raise awareness
of gender among journalists. Received funding support from Ford
Foundation (1997-2000, for regularly meetings and surveys, ect.),
and Oxfam Hong Kong (2000, for coverage the following up action
of the Fourth World Confernence on Women of the UN in 1995) Future
plans include: help the counterparts in other cities to build media
watch groups, especially help journalists report domestic violence
related stories from gender's perspective. Conduct more training
to improve journalists' gender sensitivity. Strength studies and
publishing.
